The Story Behind the Stitches
From Harry’s photograph to the banded textures of Porto.

There’s something lovely about watching texture emerge beneath your needles or hook. A familiar stitch takes on a rhythm, the fabric grows, and little details begin to catch the light.
Come make with us. Choose a textured project you’d enjoy spending time with, gather your yarn, and join our relaxed knitting and crochet make along.
A place for your kind of making
Any textured knitting or crochet project is welcome, in any yarn. Begin something new or return to a project already underway. There’s no need to buy yarn or choose a particular pattern to take part.
01 · Choose
Perhaps you’re drawn to the gentle ridges of garter stitch, moss-stitch bumps, cables, lace or a favourite crochet texture. A small accessory is just as welcome as a sweater or blanket.
02 · Prepare
Use the lead-up to browse patterns, look through your yarn and make a swatch if you need one. Our shared start is 16 November, and you’re welcome whenever you’re ready.
03 · Make
Make at your own pace and share a little along the way. A colour choice, a few rows or a texture you’re enjoying all belong in the conversation.
A little time to get organised
Choose your project, gather your yarn and enjoy planning. We’ll share inspiration as we get ready.
Porto kits and new colours arrive, alongside the first article in our November Guernsey knitting series.
Our Texture Make Along officially begins. Bring your knitting or crochet, wherever you are in the project.
Make at your own pace, follow our updates and share your progress whenever you feel like it.
A gentle community wrap-up, with no pressure to have a finished project.
On my needles
I’ll be making a cropped version of Porto in our Sportlicious yarn. I designed the original in 2018, and its oversized shape, circular yoke and bands of double moss stitch framed by garter stitch are still favourites of mine.
The inspiration came from the banded texture of Harry Freeman’s sweater in Gladys Thompson’s Patterns for Guernseys, Jerseys & Arans. Revisiting that photograph has sent me back to the book, and I’m looking forward to sharing more of that story.

Explore Porto kitsThe stories behind the stitches
Throughout November, our Journal will explore the people, working garments and textured stitches behind the Guernsey knitting tradition, beginning with the photograph that inspired Porto.
The first story arrives on Friday 6 November, followed by new articles on 13, 20 and 27 November. We’ll share them in our regular Friday newsletter and link them here as they’re published.
