The Stories We Stitch Into Our Clothes
The Stories We Stitch Into Our Clothes
The Knitter's Wardrobe - Week 4
There is something deeply satisfying about wearing a garment you’ve made yourself. From the outside, it may look like any other sweater, shawl, or scarf. But the person who made it knows the story held in every stitch.
They remember choosing the yarn, where they were, what drew them to that colour, and what they imagined it might become. They remember searching for the right pattern, the moment they found it, and the feeling of casting on. They remember the slow progress, the small decisions, and the quiet satisfaction of binding off.
Handmade garments carry those memories with them. They can also hold the memory of what was happening around us while we made them. A sweater cast on during a trip away. A shawl knitted over Christmas. A blanket made through a season of change. A simple scarf worked on during quiet evenings at home.
When we wear these pieces later, those memories often return. We remember where we were, what life felt like at the time, and the small moments that gathered around the making.
In a world where clothing is often produced quickly and anonymously, making something by hand feels intentional, personal, and full of care. Each piece carries time and attention. It is made not simply to fill a wardrobe, but to be worn, loved, and enjoyed.
And perhaps that is the true joy of a handmade wardrobe.
Not the number of garments we make, but the connection we feel to the things we have created, and the memories they carry with them. Over time, these pieces become part of everyday life. They hold the story of being made, then gather new stories as they are worn.
Stitch by stitch, they become part of our lives.
Do you have a handmade garment that carries a special memory for you?

I have a knitted baby cardigan that my Mum knitted for my daughter over 30 years ago. I have kept it because it’s beautiful and dear to me. My mum has knitted all her life and she taught us when we were little. I have knitted jumpers, cardigans, beanie, socks, scarves. I love knitting 🧶❤️
