Choosing Your Next Handmade Wardrobe Project

Choosing Your Next Handmade Wardrobe Project
The Knitter's Wardrobe - Week 5

After we've been knitting or crocheting for a while, it's not unusual to look through our wardrobe and realise just how many handmade items have found their way into everyday life: a sweater knitted a few winters ago, a shawl that always seems to come along when travelling, or a cardigan that gets worn more often than anything else.

Each one began with a little spark of inspiration and the decision to cast on. But choosing what to make next can sometimes feel surprisingly difficult.

When that happens, it can help to begin with the pieces you already love to wear. Which handmade garments do you reach for most often? What shapes feel comfortable to wear? What colours work well with the rest of your wardrobe? Do you prefer relaxed layers, simple pullovers, soft shawls, or smaller accessories you can use every day?

Sometimes the best next project is not the one that looks most exciting in the pattern photo, but the one that will easily fit most easily into your life.

It can also be useful to notice the gaps in your wardrobe: a cardigan that would make your dresses easier to wear, a lightweight sweater for in-between weather, or a simple shawl for cool mornings. Even the handmade pieces you no longer reach for can be helpful, showing you what you might choose differently next time.

A handmade wardrobe does not need to be perfect. It grows naturally over time, shaped by the garments and accessories we enjoy making, the ones we wear often, and the things we learn along the way.

If you can imagine wearing it, reaching for it, and enjoying it in the seasons ahead, it may be a project worth beginning.

As we finish The Knitter's Wardrobe series, what stays with us most is the idea that a handmade wardrobe is never built all at once. It grows over time through the garments we love to make, the pieces we return to often, and the small things we learn about what truly feels like us.

What handmade piece are you hoping to add to your wardrobe next?

Next month on the Journal, we'll be turning our attention to colour with a new series: A Month of Colour. We'll be looking at how colour shapes the feeling of a project, why certain shades draw us in, and how thoughtful palettes can bring our knitting to life.
